Monday lunch in Old Nice when the food market is not there

Monday changes the rhythm of Cours Saleya. Here is how to plan a satisfying Niçois lunch without relying on market stalls or a string of hopeful restaurant stops.

Monday lunch in Old Nice when the food market is not there

The Monday surprise on Cours Saleya

You have saved your last morning in Nice for tomatoes, socca and a long lunch. Then you reach Cours Saleya and find old prints and silverware instead of the food stalls you expected.

Monday is normally the antiques and secondhand market day here, rather than the regular food and flower market. Exceptional events can alter that arrangement, but the useful planning rule is simple: do not build a Monday lunch around buying ingredients on Cours Saleya.

Nor should you cross town expecting the Libération market to solve the problem. Its regular food market also takes Monday off. My recommendation is to stay in Old Nice, choose one proper lunch anchor and treat everything else as optional. Monday can still taste distinctly local; it just needs a different structure.

Decide whether socca is lunch or the opening act

Socca is a thin chickpea pancake cooked in a very hot oven. The pleasure comes from the contrast between its browned edges and softer middle. Eat it promptly. A portion carried around in a paper wrapper while you finish sightseeing is a poor introduction.

Chez René Socca, on rue Miralheti, and Lou Pilha Leva, on rue du Collet, are established addresses to investigate for a casual local meal. Check their Monday service before committing, particularly outside summer. These are choices, not two compulsory stops, and opening patterns can change.

Look at the serving arrangement when you arrive. Counter ordering and separate arrangements for drinks or seating can confuse first time visitors. Ask where to order before joining a queue, and do not assume buying takeaway food gives you a table.

For a light lunch, socca with another savoury item may be enough. Pissaladière is an onion tart traditionally involving anchovies and olives. Tourte de blettes can be sweet or savoury, so ask which version you are buying. Neither should be ordered merely to complete a checklist.

Reserve a table if lunch matters more than grazing

If you want wine, a bathroom, shelter and time to talk, book a restaurant instead. This is especially sensible with children, anyone who needs regular seating, or a train departure later in the afternoon.

Acchiardo, on rue Droite, is a useful address to check for traditional Niçois cooking. Confirm its opening, holiday closure and reservation arrangements directly. A familiar name is not a guarantee of a walk in table, even on a Monday.

Ask what is available that day rather than arriving determined to eat one famous dish. Daube is a slowly braised beef stew; petits farcis are stuffed vegetables, often containing meat. A salade niçoise is not automatically vegetarian, and a vegetable dish is not necessarily free of anchovies or meat stock. Explain dietary requirements before ordering.

My honest preference is one seated lunch over three queues for small portions. Grazing works best when you enjoy standing, sharing and making decisions as you go. It is less charming when everybody is hungry at once.

A morning route that leaves room for lunch

Use 10:30 as a suggested starting time, not a market opening time. Browse Cours Saleya, then walk through the lanes towards place Rossetti. The distances are short, but paving, crowds and delivery vehicles make this a wandering route rather than a brisk transfer.

If you have booked lunch at noon, keep the preceding snack small. Rue Droite and rue du Collet fit naturally into this compact area. There is no reason to add a tram journey just to fill the morning.

In July and August, choose shade and carry water. In winter, prioritise an indoor table over the idea of a sunny terrace. Rain makes an improvised standing lunch much less appealing, even when the food is good.

Put the market experience on another morning

If meeting producers and understanding the stalls is the real priority, move that part of your visit to a regular market day. You can compare options for an Old Nice market and socca walk with a chef, checking the actual itinerary, host and operating day before booking. A food tour on Monday need not include a working food market.

For a different food and drink focus, consider a private Bellet vineyard tasting above Nice. Treat it as a separate outing: vineyard appointments and transport need confirmation, and the hills are not a quick extension of an Old Town stroll. Arrange transport rather than driving after tasting.

Our concierge note

For Monday, secure the meal first and leave the browsing flexible. Reserve one table, or confirm one socca address, then enjoy Cours Saleya for what it actually offers that day. Save the shopping basket for another morning.
