Your first Col de la Madone ride: start in Menton, not Nice
Make the Riviera’s famous cycling climb a manageable morning, with a Menton start, conservative pacing and a proper plan for the descent.
Is this the right climb for your holiday?
The Col de la Madone de Gorbio is a good choice for a regular road cyclist who wants one memorable mountain morning while staying in Nice. It is not a sensible first experiment with climbing, unfamiliar pedals and a rented road bike all at once.
My recommendation is to begin and finish in Menton rather than ride there from Nice. You lose the satisfaction of leaving directly from your hotel, but avoid spending your freshest hour negotiating coastal traffic. More importantly, the descent brings you back to your starting town rather than leaving another substantial ride home.
Be precise when arranging a bike or guide: this is the Col de la Madone de Gorbio above Menton, not the Madone de Fenestre farther inland.
What the climb actually involves
The summit is approximately 925 metres above sea level. From Menton, the familiar ascent through the Sainte Agnès approach is roughly 14 kilometres, although the distance depends on where you start measuring. Expect sustained climbing rather than a short, sharp hill followed by a café.
A reasonably fit recreational rider should reserve about 90 minutes to two hours for the ascent, including brief stops. That is a planning allowance, not a performance target. Leave roughly four hours for the whole outing, including getting through town, checking the bike and descending without rushing.
Download a cycling route before leaving. Follow the recognised ascent towards Sainte Agnès and the Col de la Madone, rather than asking a general navigation app for the shortest route. Do not assume that entering the hilltop village itself is part of the climb. A village detour adds effort and complicates your timing.
Get yourself and the bicycle to Menton
From central Nice, Menton is accessible by TER train. Use Menton station, not Menton Garavan, for this plan. Check the current timetable and bicycle carriage rules for your exact service before committing: space, reservations and seasonal arrangements can change. A passenger ticket should not be treated as a guarantee that your bicycle will fit.
The simpler alternative is a bike collected in Menton, if a suitable rental is available, or a transfer explicitly booked to carry bicycles. Confirm collection hours before planning an early start. A shop opening at 09:00 cannot support a 07:30 departure unless collection has been arranged the previous day.
If you would rather delegate route selection and mechanical support, investigate a guided road cycling ride towards the Col de la Madone. Confirm the actual route, meeting point, ability level and bike provision with the operator. The booking search does not guarantee that this particular climb is included.
Choose the morning for the season
In July and August, aim to be pedalling from Menton around 07:00 to 07:30, provided daylight, transport and collection arrangements permit. That is advice to limit heat exposure, not a promise of empty roads or cool weather. Much of the effort feels exposed once the sun is established.
Spring and autumn usually offer a more forgiving window, but a pleasant waterfront temperature tells you little about cloud, wind or damp surfaces higher up. In winter, choose a dry, settled day and allow daylight for the return. Abandon the summit plan if there is any concern about ice.
Check mountain weather and road access, not just Nice’s beach forecast. Strong wind, thunderstorms or a closure are reasons to choose another ride, not challenges to overcome.
Save something for the way down
Ask for genuinely low climbing gears and test them before leaving town. Carry two filled bottles, food you already tolerate, a pump, puncture supplies, identification and a charged phone. Bring a light windproof layer even when Menton feels warm. Do not rely on finding an open fountain or café on the ascent.
Ride the opening section easier than you think necessary. If you cannot speak a full sentence, ease off. Eat before you feel depleted and turn around if the effort stops being controlled.
The descent deserves at least as much respect as the climb. Expect bends, variable surfaces and other road users on a road that is not closed to traffic. Stay on your side, slow before corners and stop somewhere safely clear of the carriageway for photographs. A rental bike with uncertain brakes is a reason to cancel, not descend cautiously and hope.
Our concierge note
Keep the afternoon uncomplicated. Back in Nice, a socca and market walk in Old Nice can suit the following day; confirm its departure time rather than squeezing it around a train connection. For this ride, the worthwhile achievement is reaching Menton again with enough energy to enjoy lunch. The summit time is secondary.
